basics course

our basics course consists of eight lessons covering the fundamental building blocks of fiction writing —dialogue, introspection/point-of-view, exposition/action, design, voicing, character development, tone, show vs. tell, and reader awareness.

Although all of these elements need to be considered simultaneously when writing, this course introduces them one at a time.

Each student receives an initial lesson explaining the one element along with an exercise to complete. The exercise receives our comments and suggestions, along with a second lesson introducing a different element. The student will then be expected to complete two new versions of the exercise: a rewrite incorporating our comments and suggestions; and a second rewrite incorporating the new lesson. Using this method, each student layers the original exercise, achieving a completed story. This method accomplishes two goals: it sets the student on the path to mastering the essential elements of fiction writing, and introduces the student to that necessary art all writers must become proficient at, rewriting. Each student can progress at his or her own pace. The course can be conducted via email or U.S. mail.*
