our basics course consists of eight lessons covering the fundamental building blocks of fiction writing —dialogue, introspection/point-of-view, exposition/action, design, voicing, character development, tone, show vs. tell, and reader awareness. Although all of these elements need to be considered simultaneously when writing, this course introduces them one at a time. Each student receives an initial lesson explaining the one element along with an exercise to complete. The exercise receives our comments and suggestions, along with a second lesson introducing a different element. The student will then be expected to complete two new versions of the exercise: a rewrite incorporating our comments and suggestions; and a second rewrite incorporating the new lesson. Using this method, each student layers the original exercise, achieving a completed story. This method accomplishes two goals: it sets the student on the path to mastering the essential elements of fiction writing, and introduces the student to that necessary art all writers must become proficient at, rewriting.
