if you are already writing fiction,
you know it’s a compelling but often frustrating and lonely
process. A little like feeling your way through a dark passage of
unknown length. You can run into mysterious twists, confusing echoes,
end up doubting your sense of direction.
A little luck, a good eye for detail, a knack for telling a story,
creativity and determination…all of these things can help you
find your way. But it’s fine craftsmanship–the ability
to so convincingly create the world on the page that your reader moves
through the words and into the experience–that is the beacon
that stays with you to the end. And craftsmanship is not a matter
of luck or genes. It’s a learned skill that requires analysis
and practice.
We have years of experience providing new writers a sound basis to
build on and providing more experienced writers the accurate, effective
feedback they need.
here's what we suggest:
The ABCs is a Lending Library of information
and a great introduction to the basic elements of fiction writing
for those of you just starting out. But even if you’re already
producing fiction on a regular basis, a few reminders on technique
can’t hurt. We discuss nine basic fiction elements here, and
will be happy to add more if you have a specific request. Read the
descriptions, look at the examples, try an exercise. We want the ABCs
to be a useful tool for everyone, so if you have a suggestion for
improving it in any way, we’d like to hear from you.
BASICS COURSE is exactly that, a
course for beginning writers. We know that structure, feedback, and
professional guidance early-on lead to producing confident fiction
sooner.
COACHING is our antidote to writing
in a vacuum. To create successful fiction, you need experienced feedback.
If you have doubts about the overall direction or quality of your
work, Coaching, with its one-on-one approach, can provide a jump-start
to more effective writing.
